How Google’s AI Mode and AI Overviews describe your business
Google now answers many searches with an AI summary above the results; AI Mode turns search into a conversation. Both are written from Google’s index — and when the summary answers well, fewer people click through to anyone.
What it reads. Most of it, you can change.

- 02The most helpful pagesWhichever pages it judges best answer the question — not always yours.
- 03Follow-up questionsAI Mode answers in conversation, so later questions can change the shortlist.

Six checks in Google AI Mode. Asked as a stranger would ask.
- Whether an AI Overview appears on your buyer questions
- Whether you’re cited as a source in it
- What the summary says about you
- Whether any page blocks snippets, and so can’t be cited
- Who is named in your place
- How AI Mode’s follow-up answers change the shortlist
The other engines. Each decides differently.
Before you ask. Each answered in its first sentence.
How do we get into AI Overviews?
There’s no separate submission. Google’s guidance is that a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet; beyond that, it’s what the page says and how well it answers the question.
Do AI Overviews reduce traffic?
Ofcom cites US research finding that people who see an AI Overview are almost half as likely to click a link. Being the cited source matters more than it did.
What’s the difference between AI Mode and AI Overviews?
AI Overviews appear above the normal results; AI Mode is a separate, conversational search where people ask follow-ups. The audit checks both.
Can a nosnippet tag keep us out?
It can: pages that block snippets aren’t eligible to be shown as sources. The audit checks for it.
